Doris Burkhalter Memorial Scholarship

$1000

Doris Burkhalter was known for her singing, her will to survive and her determination to make every day count. Doris was diagnosed with stage 4 skin cancer in early 2012 and started chemo immediately after the diagnosis. Doris did not let this hurdle stop her. She continued serving her community through the aid of the Auxiliary the Amicae of West Point, Ms.

She was well known in her community and well loved by her family and friends. Because of her loving nature and ability to make all feel welcomed in her home, she was lovingly referred to as NannaBurk to all.

Even though she was fighting her own battle, Doris always had words of encouragement for those in need. She often said, “This battle that I’m fighting is not for my benefit, it is for those that see me fighting."

Doris lost her battle with cancer on January 13, 2017; however, the struggle to carry on remains. As her daughter, I am creating a tribute in her honor while helping needy children get one step closer to their dreams.  As NannaBurk world say, “your battle that you are fighting to reach your dream is not for your benefit. It is for the ones coming behind you to see and know that they can do it as well”.
